New reports suggest that the compliance chief of Binance who remains imprisoned in Nigeria, Tigran Gambaryan, apparently contracted malaria and his life is in danger.

Gambaryan’s health in danger

According to information provided by Gambaryan’s relatives to the media CoinDesk, the representative of Binance He collapsed when appearing in court on May 24, and since then he has not been taken to the hospital to determine the reason for his decompensation.

In this regard, a family spokesperson indicated:

Despite a court order by Judge Emeka Nwite issued on Thursday, May 23, Tigran Gabaryan is yet to be transferred to hospital from Kuje Prison. It has not yet been officially determined what he is suffering from as the medical facilities in Kuje are inadequate. It is suspected that he has a serious throat infection and malaria.

As such, Gambaryan has remained in prison since early April following the escape of his colleague, the regional regent of Binance for Africa, Nadeem Anjarwalla. Both officials and the exchange were accused of tax evasion, added to alleged money laundering crimes for USD $35 million.

In a statement sent to CoinDesk, Gambaryan’s wife, Yuki Gambaryan, expressed concern about the accused’s situation, requesting support to address his health. “This has gone too far. I plead with everyone who can help, including our own American government, to recognize that an innocent man’s life is at risk. Please at least let him go to the hospital to recover. But the most important thing is that he comes home to us,” wrote.

Denied bail

The new reports on Gambaryan’s health come days after a hearing where the possibility of bail was denied, this after considering that there are possible risks of flight given what happened with the partner of the representative of Binance.

Judge Emeka Nwite of the Federal Superior Courtl, agreed with the prosecution’s argument that Gambaryan was a flight risk during a hearing today. He argued that several factors had to be considered, such as the nature of the crimes and the seriousness of the crimes.

After the court’s refusal, the CEO BinanceRichard Teng spoke out in favor of Gambaryan, supporting his innocence and asking the Nigerian government for his release. He has said publicly that the executive had no decision-making power over the company.

We are deeply disappointed that Tigran Gambaryan, who has no decision-making power in the company, remains detained. Tigran has dedicated himself to public service and fighting crime for most of his life. These charges against him are completely unfounded. He should be released as discussions between Binance and Nigerian government officials continue“said a spokesperson for Binance to the media about these events.
