- Cardano was under a DDoS attack, but it was unsuccessful
- The attacker sought to take control of funds staked in ADA, but was unsuccessful
- The developers rushed to address the problem
- Node version will be updated accordingly
The blockchain Cardano faced a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on Tuesday night that attempted to steal ADA tokens held on staking In the net.
However, the attack was unsuccessful and was mitigated before causing any damage. The developers are now working on an update to the node and a fix that could deter future attacks of a similar nature.
Raúl Antonio, technology director of Fluid Tokenssaid on social media that the attack began at block 10,487,530 and that each transaction executed 194 smart contracts. He explained that the attack was aimed at manipulating the blockchain Cardano to charge lower fees for high-value transactions.
The attacker spent 0.9 ADA per transaction and filled each block with multiple transactions, in an attempt to stress the network, he continued. If he was successful, the attacker could get his hands on staked ADA funds.
“The idea behind this attack is to take advantage of the fact that the size of the referrer scripts currently does not affect the transaction fee, but does affect the work that validators must do to process the transaction“, explained Philip Disarro, founder and CEO of the development company Cardano, Anastasia Labs.
Disarro added that the DDoS could be stopped immediately by deregistering the staking credential used by the attacker. The attack was stopped shortly after the founder’s post.
“The attacker stopped his attack after reading my tweet in an attempt to protect his funds. Unfortunately, it was too late and the looting of his funds is already underway.“, wrote.
Thanks for the free money, idiot. It’s truly iconic that the attacker who supposedly wanted to harm the ecosystem actually ended up donating to the open source smart contract development work we do.
Node upgrade on the way
Intersecta member-based organization for the ecosystem Cardanolater confirmed the attack and thanked the developer community for the quick response against the DDoS attack.
Although the blockchain Cardano was not compromised and continued to function normally,”The network has experienced higher than normal load and some Staking Pool Operators (SPOs) have been negatively impacted due to an escalation in block height battles”he explained Intersect.
The team added that once a solution has been tested and successfully implemented, they will share “the new version of the node so that SPOs can update it”. (SPO stands for Stake Pool Operators.)
The working group of Intersect assured that it is collaborating to identify and test a solution to further minimize the impact of such spam attacks. It is worth noting that a DDoS is a common type of cyber attack in which a malicious actor floods a server (or a blockchain) with spam to prevent users from accessing connected online sites and services.
ADA, the native cryptocurrency of Cardanofell modestly 1% in price amid the attack to be trading at USD $0.388 at press time, according to data from CoinMarketCap.
