Relief in the midst of the storm unleashed since last Friday, when the reappearance of African swine fever (ASF) in two wild boars was reported after more than 30 years since its eradication in Bellaterra (Barcelona). The Minister of Agriculture, Luis Planas, has announced that “China will apply the regionalization signed 3 weeks ago and that this means saving 42% of exports to third countries. “It’s good news.” Which will reduce the veto on Spanish pork exports to the province of Barcelonaadded Planas, who has also committed to continue negotiating with the group of 20 countries that have not yet contemplated ‘regionalization’ so that they can make their position more flexible, and have completely closed their borders. The Minister of Agriculture has reported that “This means saving 42% of exports to third countriesexcept in this regionalization in which the province of Barcelona is taken into account. This is good news.” Planas recalled that 1.2 million tons of pork are exported outside the European Union (EU) and, specifically, the minister added that the Asian giant was the first non-EU country for exports of Spanish pork with 550,674 tons at the end of 2024. This is the 41.74% of the total, while in terms of value it represents 29% of everything we sell to non-EU destinations. These are about 1,100 million euros.

The minister explained that Spain exported to 104 countries last year, of which 44 requested additional requirements. “There are 24 countries that accept regionalization, another 20 that reject itbut those who regionalize do so based on different parameters and in China it is the province,” the head of Agriculture specified.
