The initial reports of the population describe a sudden collapse: traffic lights off, detainees, hospitals by resorting to closed generators and shops.

In social networks, users shared images of dark cities and expressed concern about the lack of official information.

According to Red Eléctrica de España (REE) and Nacais Energy Networks (REN), the blackout began with a waterfall disconnection of the Iberian Network of the European Electrical System, especially affecting the Iberian Peninsula and parts of France such as Bordeaux and Toulouse.

It is estimated that the total restoration of the supply will take between 6 and 10 hours, with some areas partially recovering after 2 hours.

Some hypotheses that are handled include:

1. Technical failure in the European interconnected network: Some sources, such as e-redes in Portugal, suggest that the blackout could be due to a problem in the high voltage lines of the European electricity grid, causing a waterfall disconnection.
2. Cyber ​​attack: Both the National Institute of Cybersecurity (INCIBE) in Spain and the Ministry of Defense are analyzing the possibility of a computer attack on the Scada systems that control the electricity grid. However, there is no conclusive evidence that confirms it. Portuguese minister António Leitão Amaro did not rule out sabotage, but asked for caution.
3. Fire in France: A rumor in social networks circulated on a fire in southern France that would have damaged a high voltage line, but Ren Portugal denied this information.
4. Overload or imbalance in the network: Red Eléctrica said that a “very strong oscillation of the power flow” caused the automatic disconnection of the Iberian network of the European electrical system, which could indicate an imbalance in the supply and demand of energy.
