Gary Wang and Nishad Singh, co-founder and former director of engineering for the failed exchange FTX, will be formally tried and sentenced by the end of the year for their role in the embezzlement scheme perpetrated by Sam Bankman-Fried.
Sentence by the end of the year
According to information published in court records, Singh will be sentenced on October 30, while Wang will be tried on November 20. Both former executives accepted the charges against them, and actively collaborated with the authorities to clarify the events that occurred with FTX.
Both reached an agreement with the US authorities with the aim of obtaining a reduction in their tentative sentences. In addition to providing all the information related to the complex embezzlement scheme perpetrated under the Bankman-Fried administration, they also testified in the trial against him.
Among the most notable allegations by Singh are details about the financial situation of Alameda Research and the back door that allowed the use of funds belonging to clients of FTX. This resulted in a gap of USD $13 billion that was never returned.
For Wang’s part, he offered more details on the above and also revealed part of Bankman-Fried’s plans, and how he used the funds in question to give greater reach and influence to FTX, even in spheres of political power.
While their involvement in this large-scale embezzlement scheme alone could lead to decades in prison, it is understood that Wang and Singh could receive reduced sentences for collaborating with authorities. However, it is not clear how this will be reflected in the court’s verdict, or whether it will entail less severe prison terms.
Bankman-Fried will spend 25 years in prison
As for Bankman-Fried, he was sentenced to 25 years behind bars on March 28, according to a federal court ruling in Manhattan. The large amount of evidence presented to the court was taken into account, as well as the testimonies of Wang, Singh and other senior executives involved in the embezzlement scheme.
U.S. prosecutors had previously sought a sentence of up to 50 years in prison, while his lawyers had argued for a lesser sentence of around six years.
The sentence came as a result of the legal process in which he was found guilty of seven criminal charges in November 2023 by a court. Investigations, testimony and evidence showed that Bankman-Fried engaged in acts to defraud clients, lenders and investors of FTX, This is one of the largest embezzlement schemes in the crypto industry.
In his first statement after being sentenced, Bankman-Fried said he did not think what he did was illegal, as he tried to hold himself to a high standard but was unable to meet the requirements. He said he was deeply sorry for the inconvenience caused, and wanted to do everything he could to compensate the victims.
