“I am 100% committed to El Salvador”

Corbin Keegan, the American known in El Salvador as the first inhabitant of Bitcoin City, reacted with surprise to the impact that the news that he decided to go to his native Chicago in the state of Illinois in the United States has generated in the community.

Keegan made it clear its total commitment to Bitcoin City and El Salvador stating that his departure does not mean abandoning the dream of residing in the city promised by Nayib Bukele, but rather, continuing to work to make it a reality.

“I am 100% committed to everything in Bitcoin City and El Salvador,” Keegan wrote in a message on X in which he added that he will stay in Chicago for a few months. All with the idea of “accumulating more sats since I can’t earn much in Conchagua.” Later, in a message sent to CriptoNoticias he said: “I’ll be back in September.”

In itself, Conchagua is a municipality of El Salvador that belongs to the department of La Unión, which is the territory targeted by Bukele to build the bitcoiner city, powered by geothermal energy.

So it was precisely in La Unión where the American lived for more than two years on land owned by a Salvadoran woman who allowed him to build a small home there. All of this motivated by the idea of making the dream of being the first inhabitant of Bitcoin City come true.

Since he heard it in 2021, a phrase uttered by Bukele resonated in Keegan’s head: “people will be able to live in La Unión and work in Bitcoin City. “You will soon start to see all the benefits when the development and investment comes.”

However, time has passed and the Salvadoran metropolis remains just a promise of the first government of the Salvadoran president. Even until now, it is unknown if the project has been formalized or registered with the Vice Ministry of Public Works of the Central American country.

During the time that Keegan lived in Conchagua, he generated income by doing construction work, fishing, and other tasks for which he received a payment of no more than $20 per day. For that reason he decided to return to Chicago.

He did not specify what he does, but he did share images and claims to be moving boats out and into Lake Michigan in exchange for bitcoin.

His story seems to have reached the hearts of some bitcoiners, who express messages of solidarity, along with their intention to support his cause with donations. Meanwhile, The construction of Bitcoin City is a topic that has not been mentioned since the Bukele government nor do the organizations respond to the comments requested by CriptoNoticias in an attempt to understand what has happened to the project.

However, “Bitcoin City” is an increasingly pronounced name in El Salvador, but not exactly related to the project promised by Bukele in 2021, but rather with the Bitcoin Berlin citadel, whose team of leaders promotes it as the ideal territory for develop the dream city or the true Salvadoran Bitcoin City.
