Mercadona will market more than 130,000 tons of national oranges this year

Mercadona plans to market 131,000 tons of national orange during the 2025/26 campaignwhich has just begun and will continue until approximately next August.

Oranges will be marketed from fields in the Valencian Community, Andalusia, the Region of Murcia and Catalonia, thanks to the collaboration with suppliers Martinavarro, Bollo, Fontestad, Frutas Tono, Frutinter, Anecoop, Alcafruit, Lasarte, Agronostrum, AM Fresh Spain Citrus, Llusar Torres Group, Vicente Giner and Nufresco.

In the specific case of the Region of Murcia, where Mercadona collaborates with suppliers Martinavarro, Bollo, Frutas Tono, AM Fresh Spain Citrus, Grupo Llusar Torres and Vicente Ginerthe company plans to buy 11,000 tons of oranges from fields in Murcia, as reported by company sources in a press release. Mercadona offers national orange in all its stores in its three main formats: bulk and mesh of 3 and 5 kilos.

The entry of the orange thus continues the 2025/26 campaign of citrus fruits of national origin in Mercadona, which began last October with the arrival of mandarin and lemon from Spanish suppliers. Mercadona’s commitment to the Spanish primary sector “is firm and prioritizes guarantee stable and transparent relationships with its 13 national orange supplierswho in turn work with more than 2,000 farmers from all over Spain,” they indicated.

Mercadona’s commitment to the national orange “reaffirms its commitment to the primary sector and its clients” and in coordination with its suppliers it manages to extend the availability of the national orange until the end of summer, thus promoting the consumption of seasonal and local fruits.

This commitment is part of Mercadona’s quality and origin strategy, which promotes the consumption of products of national origin as long as they meet the required quality standards and there is sufficient availability to supply the stores. Currently, 85% of the company’s total assortment is of national origin.

Citrus consumption for a balanced basket

Mercadona encourages the consumption of citrus fruits, as well as freshly squeezed orange juice available in the Fruit and Vegetable section in the three usual packaging formats (250 milliliters, 500 milliliters and 1 liter). This service, which began to be implemented in 2016 in all the company’s stores, is a project that was developed through joint innovation between Mercadona, the specialist supplier Zumex and the clients themselves.

Citrus fruits are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and its consumption contributes to maintaining a balanced diet. Oranges, tangerines and lemons, among other citrus fruits, are great allies to complete a balanced shopping basket.

Mercadona supports the campaigns of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food within the framework of the strategy #alimentosdespaña and its ‘The richest country in the world’ campaign.

Likewise, it defends fair commercial practices and for years has adhered to the Code of Good Commercial Practices in Food Contracting. This voluntary agreement, which was another step in promoting fair business practicesis part of the Law on Measures to Improve the Functioning of the Food Chain and is promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in collaboration with different associations throughout the agri-food chain in Spain.
