Nations do not have friends, they only have interests

What is behind these movie events that we are experiencing with stupor and confusion, but that are very real for the Venezuelans themselves and not to mention for Nicolás Maduro and his wife. Donald Trump has decided reheat the world situation and demonstrate once again that he is the sheriff from the west. For the moment, what there is is a power vacuum… and an excess of fear about the future. The greatest danger would be that a civil war would break out in Venezuela. Something that suits no one, much less the United States.

An attempt is made to fill the power vacuum with Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, now the new interim president of the country. Circumstance that draws attention and forces us to think about possible betrayals within the leadership of the Venezuelan Government. Including that of Delcy herself. The almost surgical action of the elite unit Delta Force that captured the former president and his wife could not have been so clean or so fast without internal support, which includes the presence of the CIA in Maduro’s inner circle. Without forgetting that cracks and confrontations in the regime have existed for a long time, and also in the high echelons of the Armed Forces.

But let’s look at the other side of the coin. Donald Trump is not a typical politician, he is a businessman – he has always been one – who holds the presidency of the most powerful country in the world and uses that power that his position gives him to resolve the issues that interest the US but above all the businessman Donald Trump. According to the president himself, he cares about oil, that is, your personal affairs and businessand the proper functioning of the United States. They are still two well-connected communicating vessels. The phrase is not from the American president, but from Lord Temple, prime minister of the United Kingdom in the 19th century, but Trump would undoubtedly sign it today: “Nations have no permanent friends or permanent enemies, they only have permanent interests.”.

Nobody doubts that Maduro is a dictator and that he has benefited from drug trafficking (he is considered the head of the so-called Clan of the Suns) also seems beyond doubt. However, the question that many are asking is whether these circumstances give Trump the right to violate the sovereignty of a country and act as if he were the gendarme of international justice. Trump’s excuse is that he has not invaded Venezuela, he has only arrested Maduro by applying an international search warrant for being a drug trafficker and wants to ensure a reasonable evolution in events in the country. so as not to hinder the launch of the new oil project that the US plans to create.

However, for many, Maduro’s drug trafficking is just an excuse for Donald Trump to get his desired oil. The famous “backyard“that make up the Hispanic countries within the strategic zone for the US requires maintaining political, economic and security control, in the face of external influences such as China or Russia. It is about applying the old doctrine Monroewhich presupposes that America is for Americans and not for Asian or European powers. And Venezuelan oil is a very sweet candy to which the Chinese had already set their eyes and almost their hands.

For now, there will be some continuity in the country until the political and economic situations are clarified. The institutional apparatus of the regime remains intact. This avoids confrontations and eliminates leadership without dismantling the regime. The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, a key and fundamental piece in this transition, will be in charge of protecting and supervising the actions of Delcy Rodríguez. María Corina Machado, quite ignored by Trump himself, goes into reserve, that is, she continues where she was, until a possible, although not probable, new staging.

Finally, the most important thing is not what we have seen and its future consequences, but how this very intervention can affect suigéneris to the World Order. The new times with their new technologies and their integrated cyber operations, will determine some changes when acting in the international arena, so much in the rules as in the forms. If this Trump “model” is politically and economically successful, it will become a draw for other powers as eager for power and conquests as the United States, and those are, without a doubt, China and Russia. Europe, our old Europe, will continue as always: seeing them come and seeing them pass… and then urgently meet in Brussels and complain about how bad the world is.
