Ryanair will close all its routes with the Azores due to “high airport taxes”

Ryanair has announced this Friday the closure of all its routes to the Azores (Portugal) from March 2026 in response to the “high airport taxes” set by the “ANA airport monopoly” and the “inaction of the Portuguese Government”.

The airline low cost Irish criticizes the Portuguese Government because itAir traffic control rates have increased by 120% since the pandemic and has also introduced a travel tax of 2 euros to travel to the archipelago.

ANA, the Portuguese airport manager, has been owned by the French group Vinci since 2013 and Ryanair criticizes that it obtains “monopolistic profits” and can increase airport taxes “without penalty.”

Therefore, the company asks the Portuguese Government to intervene and guarantee that its airports are “a fundamental part” of the national infrastructure, especially in an island territory like the Azores.

In this way, the airline has made a decision similar to those it has taken in other countries of the European Union, such as Spain, where it has cut more than two million seats and canceled its operations at several regional airports citing the “high” airport taxes of the “monopoly” Aena.
