The founder and former CEO of FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried is already in the process of being transferred from New York to a federal facility in California, where he must serve his sentence and continue assuming his legal process.

According to a report published by Wall Street Journal, Bankman-Fried’s transfer began on the morning of this Wednesday, May 22, thereby closing any possibility of her remaining in New York while her legal team appealed the sentence handed down to her.

Sentenced to 25 years in prison

On March 28, Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years behind bars, a federal court ruled in Manhattan.

US prosecutors had previously requested a sentence of up to 50 years in prison, while the defendant’s lawyers had insisted on a lower sentence of around 6 years.

The sentence came as a consequence of the legal process in which he was found guilty of seven criminal charges in November 2023 by a Court. Investigations, testimony and evidence revealed that Bankman-Fried engaged in acts to defraud customers, lenders and investors of FTX, This is one of the largest embezzlement schemes in the crypto industry.

Bankman-Fried’s team is currently working on appealing the conviction, for which they filed a motion on April 12. However, at the moment there is no official response regarding this process.

In his first statements after being sentenced, Bankman-Fried indicated that he did not think what he did was illegal, since he tried to hold himself to a high standard but could not meet what was required to do so. He assured that he was very sorry for the inconvenience caused, and wanted to do everything possible to compensate the victims.
