the new mission with bitcoin

Key facts:
  • In the Peruvian Andes, the Inca culture is learning about bitcoin.

  • In the Amazon jungle they are talking about the invention of Satoshi Nakamoto.

Cusco, a region located in the Andes of Peru, which was part of the ancient Inca empire. Currently, it preserves numerous vestiges of this civilization that disappeared more than 5 centuries ago. Therefore, it is surprising to hear the word bitcoin (BTC) in this area, as it represents a clear contrast between ancient culture and modern financial technology.

That is precisely what is happening in the town center of Huayllapata, where an association of Quechua women are not only talking about bitcoin, but also learning about the invention of Satoshi Nakamoto and accepting payments in BTC in exchange for their crafts.

The first digital currency in the history of humanity begins to be part of the Quechua culture. The same one that has preserved its language, traditions and social structures, adapting to changes without losing its essence.

It is a meeting between the present and the ancestor, an achievement of the non-governmental organization (NGO) Motiv, an economic and educational initiative that has helped more than 60,000 people know about bitcoin in Peru. Its strategy is based on educating the leaders of indigenous communities so that they can train the rest of the community.

“When you come to a place like this, sometimes you find that people are not inspired to forge their own destiny. That is why Motiv invests most of its time in searching for and training community leaders who have a personal interest in accumulating wealth through bitcoin,” says filmmaker Julian Figueroa, who narrates on video his experience through Peruvian lands. .

The introduction of bitcoin into the indigenous culture of Peru has been a real challenge. A community leader explains that when asking the Quechua mothers who were interested in learning about bitcoin, many expressed fear.

The fear arises from gender limitations imposed by local culture, which dictates that women should only do household chores. However, for these indigenous women, there is no turning back because bitcoin represents an opportunity for significant change.

Bitcoin, the bank of the Amazon rainforest

A radical change is also taking place in the Quebrada Verde Rural Village, in the district of Pachacámac, south of Lima, the capital of Peru. There, people who have never had a bank account in their lives are learning that with Bitcoin you can be your own banks, as Motiv founder Vali Popescu points out.

“There are so many fruits that bitcoin is bringing to this area of Peru, where we must understand that it is not just a transaction between wallets, but a community transformation through appropriate leaders.”

Vali Popescu, founder of Motiv.

In such a way that bitcoin is now common in this area of Quebrada Verdewhere the giant lake otters and the legendary vizcachas, both endangered species, have dared to continue existing, among humble goat and sheep herders.

However, if bitcoin were an explorer, in Peru he would have put on the Indiana Jones suit to get into the Amazon jungle and its city in the San Martín region, Tarapoto, in the northeast of the South American country.

There, where the government seems to have forgotten about the residents of the area, Motiv partnered with locals to put into operation a drinking water treatment plant, which they take to their homes. in bottles that everyone pays with bitcoin.

Likewise, bitcoin is popular in the city of Iquitos, specifically in the Florido neighborhood, there is an area known as “a little piece of heaven that fell in Peru”, located 20 minutes by boat on the left bank of the Amazon River. . Paradoxically, this area is characterized by the accumulation of solid waste, which represents an important environmental problem, which also reveals the absence of government plans to improve the quality of life of those who live in the place.

“Here you are in the middle of nowhere, but here you can still pay with bitcoin,” says Popescu.

Further away, in this jungle community on the banks of the Amazon River is the Pedrito Farm, one of the most important tourist attractions in the area, which will eventually accept payments in BTCas stated by the founder of Motiv.

The owners of the Farm, recognized as a conservation park for Amazonian species, are among the residents who learn about bitcoinmany do it in the center that Motiv has set up there to educate.

“These bitcoin circular economies are so that people not only know about the cryptocurrency, but also can use it for their daily needs. It is something necessary, because poverty exists due to the lack of education, although corruption is another issue.

And this is how bitcoin is moving the economy of the most remote towns in Peru. It is part of the great “orange” movement, like the color of the logo that identifies the pioneering digital currency.

The good thing is that now we are seeing that people here are saying that they want to be part of this change because they have a sense of freedom and that is the freedom of not depending on the government or a corporation, added the Iquitos resident, whose name is not known. was revealed in the video.
