Donald Trump has redoubled his support for cryptocurrencies.

After having promised a few weeks ago that he will do everything possible to ensure that digital currency innovation is maintained in the United States if he is re-elected president, the Republican candidate once again expressed his support for the new asset class at a campaign event in the one who would have referred to himself as “cryptopresident.”

The convicted billionaire and former president proclaimed himself the “crypto president” at a fundraising event in San Francisco hosted by the general partner of Craft VenturesDavid Sacks and tech billionaire Chamath Palihapitiya, as reported Reuters on Friday.

Trump would have echoed his previous comments by criticizing Democrats’ attempts to regulate the sector and expressing his support after calling cryptocurrencies important, according to the report.

Cryptocurrencies have become a recurring theme of the US presidential elections. During his 2024 campaign, Trump has made numerous comments on the matter, expressing his defense, and even took steps to embrace digital assets, including Bitcoinas a donation mechanism for your campaign.

The comments have represented a significant change in tone for the Republican, who has long been skeptical and critical of such technology, calling digital currencies “dangerous“, “scam” and “a disaster waiting to happen”.

His speech has taken a 180° turn in recent months, providing statements pro-Bitcoin and making promises to sector enthusiasts. Although he has assured that he himself does not personally invest in Bitcoin nor other digital currencies, (although it does have its own portfolio), has said that it believes in the right for anyone to use them freely in the country.

In this sense, Trump had already hinted that he saw himself as a “crypto president” when he said in a previous statement that he is building a “crypto army” to confront the Biden administration’s offensive. He has also invited cryptocurrency fans to vote for him in November.

“If you like cryptocurrencies in any form, and they come in many different forms, if you are pro-cryptocurrencies, you better vote for Trump”he said in a speech last month.

During the most recent event, in which Trump raised USD $12 million from venture capitalists in the technology area, reiterated this vision again when “made it clear that the Biden-Gensler crusade against cryptocurrencies will stop an hour later” of his arrival at the White House, according to a source told Reuters. Gary Gensler is the chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
