The furry meme that inspired Dogecoin and many other memecoins has passed on to another life. A party commemorating him will be held in Japan on Sunday.

Kabosu, the Shiba Inu dog who is the face of one of the most viral memes on the Internet, died this Friday at the age of more than 17.

Its owner, Atsuko Sato, a resident of Japan, confirmed the event in a May 24 blog post. “At 7:50 am I fell fast asleep“says a translated poem written by Sato about the death of his pet.

Kabosu is possibly the most popular dog on the Internet. In the 2010s, his photo capturing his funny gesture went viral and was used by thousands of netizens who wrote colorful snippets of dialogue in the Comic Sans font over the image.

The meme is also widely known in the cryptocurrency enthusiast community for having inspired the creation of Dogecoin in 2013, today the memecoin largest by market capitalization.

Dogecoin (DOGE) was the first memecoin or meme-inspired cryptocurrency. Although it was initially born as a joke and with the intention of being a more accessible alternative for inexperienced users of the world of digital assets, it has become a phenomenon of the era of digital finance.

In recent years, hundreds of other cryptocurrencies inspired by DOGE and Shiba Inu dogs have appeared on the market. Shiba Inu (SHIB), Floki (FLOKI), dogwifhat (WET) and Bonk (BONK) are some of the tokens that make up the memecoins with a current capitalization of more than USD $58,000 million.

A memorial ceremony for the iconic little dog will be held on Sunday at Flower Kaori in Kotsu no Mori, Narita City, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., its owner said, leaving an open invitation to attend.
