Mercadona boosts sales of ‘made in Spain’ potatoes by 35% in the summer campaign

Mercadona has increased 35% in the commercialization of national potatoes this year compared to the previous year, reaching 184,800 tons. What the distribution group has attributed to the commitment to double harvests (winter and summer campaigns). Specifically, it has acquired 160,000 tons in the summer campaignwhich began last May and has just finished, to which must be added the 24,800 tons of the winter campaign. A harvest that was grown between the months of August and December 2024. Mercadona has highlighted that this operation has allowed them to “have national potatoes on their shelves during the first months of this year“.
Double harvest
Specifically, the supermarket chain has offered national potatoes for eight months. Your potato specialist at Mercadona, Laura Merino, has indicated that “This has been possible thanks to the recovery of winter crops in warmer areas such as Andalusia, the Region of Murcia and the Balearic Islands, and the good weather in the summer months, which has made it possible for the summer campaign to have been very good in terms of production and quality.” Merino also added that “thanks to the good quality of the potatodemand has increased considerably.”
Specifically, the company has marketed potatoes grown in fields in Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha (Albacete, Toledo), Castilla y León (Ávila, Valladolid, Segovia and Zamora), Galicia (Ourense), Euskadi (Araba/Álava), the Canary Islands (Tenerife and Gran Canaria), the Balearic Islands (Mallorca and Ibiza), the Region of Murcia (Cartagena), Valencian Community (Alicante) and Andalusia (Seville, Málaga, Almería). To achieve this, it has had the collaboration of local suppliers such as Hijolusa Potatoes, Meléndez Potatoes, Gómez Potatoes, Udapa, Cadimisa, Illacamp, Papacan, Mr. Chippy and Legufrut.
85% of the assortment is of national origin

Return of the Spanish potato in January: the green
The supermarket chain is already offering imported potatoes of origin Francethe country where the new potato campaign is currently taking place, with the aim of covering customer needs for the rest of the year after practically ending production in almost all Spanish regions. Nevertheless, still maintains some references of national origin, such as the 2 kilo special frying potato in stores in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands or the white flesh potato in stores in Galicia and Asturias, both until the beginning of the year.
From January and February 2026Mercadona is going to once again have the national potato on the shelves of all its stores (a period in which national potatoes were not traditionally sold) thanks to the company’s commitment to the Verdete, the potato of the winter campaign.
