Musk’s robotaxi is one step closer after securing new regulatory endorsements in the US

The Arizona Department of Transportation grants Tesla a key permit, on-demand transportation services (transportation network company), to secure new regulatory endorsements that pave the way for its robotaxis business. It should be noted that Tesla needed this license to operate an on-demand transportation service in the state.
Arizona is one of the states where its CEO, Elon Musk, has predicted that Tesla will operate what he has called robotaxis before the end of the year. The company has not yet begun offering rides in vehicles without human safety monitors present in the driver or front passenger seat in the cars that consumers can request in Austin and the San Francisco Bay area, the first two markets where Tesla is offering an on-demand transportation service.
Tesla’s efforts to launch a robotaxis business and catch up with Google parent Alphabet’s Waymo, which has operated in the Phoenix area since late 2018, are being closely watched by investors. Musk has increasingly emphasized the company’s work in autonomy, robotics and artificial intelligence, as its core car sales business has slowed. The other states where Musk has said he hopes Tesla will be operating taxi services before the end of the year in Nevada and Florida. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Arizona announcement.
The expansion into on-demand transportation requires Tesla to comply with regulatory frameworks that vary significantly between states, which involves certification processes, insurance and background checks for the drivers who will supervise the vehicles during the initial phase. In environments like Arizona, where autonomous transportation companies already operate, the arrival of Tesla joins a regulatory ecosystem familiar with this type of services, although the company is still pending specific authorizations to operate completely driverless vehicles.
Tesla’s progress in this segment also develops in parallel to the deployment of new versions of its autonomous driving softwarea key component for the future robotaxi. The performance and safety of these updates are subject to supervision by federal and state agencies, which evaluate both the system’s behavior on the road and the response to incidents. These technical and regulatory factors will determine the speed with which the manufacturer can expand its on-demand transportation network in the United States.
Unlike its dominance in the electric vehicle market, Tesla is not ahead in this business. Well, there are already companies that operate these services in San Francisco as a battlefield. Waymo and Cruisesheltered by firms such as General Motors or Microsoft, are the leading companies in a market, where Amazon also competes through its platform.Zoox‘.
