Spaniards bought 2.21 million used vehicles

The used passenger car market closed 2025 with 2.21 million vehicles soldwhich is 4.2% more than the previous year, according to data published this Thursday by the employers’ associations Ganvam (official and independent distributors) and Faconauto (dealers).

In this way, For every new car, 1.9 used cars were sold in Spain. In December alone, sales of second-hand passenger cars recorded a total of 217,332 units, 2.1% more. The balance for 2025 shows that the renovation of the park continues to be a pending issue, in the opinion of the employers.

The sales of Models between three and five years old grew at double the rate (+8.8%) than those with more than ten (+4.6%), but operations with these older vehicles concentrated 57.3% of the market. Specifically, the weight of the oldest models in the second-hand market explains that the average age of the used vehicle sold in Spain is 11 years, exceeding 15 in the case of sales between individuals.

For this reason, Faconauto and Ganvam insist on the need to “promote an effective strategy to encourage scrapping that contributes to removing the oldest and most polluting models from circulation.” In this sense, They consider it essential that the activation of direct aid for the purchase of electrified is completed with the development of the national renewal plan contemplated in the Sustainable Mobility Law and which includes support for Euro 6d.

For these entities, boost demand for used vehicles and encouraging it to be more profitable to scrap the old and polluting model than to resell it on the second-hand market is a strategic and essential pillar to promote the renewal of the park and, therefore, the decarbonization objectives.

By channels, imports – which accounted for 6% of the market – were the most increased their operations, with an increase of 20.8% at the end of the year. This explains why models between 5 and 10 years old – the protagonists of these import operations – grew by 13.7% in 2025.

By energy sources, the data show a second-hand market in which diesel marks a negative sign (-0.8%)although it continues to be the majority fuel, with 49% of the representation in 2025. Gasoline follows, with 36% of sales (+2.3%).
