Telefónica leads 5G in Spain and offers coverage to 94% of the population

Telephone It now reaches 5,700 municipalities throughout Spain and more than 94% of the population with 5G, which “consolidates its leadership” in the deployment of this technology, the company said in a statement this Tuesday.

This coverage is possible thanks to the deployment of nodes in more than 5,000 municipalities (one node can cover several municipalities) in the two main bands in which 5G currently operates in Spain (3,500 MHz and 700 MHz band).

Telefónica also declares itself a leader in the deployment of ‘fast’ 5G, 5G+ or high performance (3,500 MHz), with active nodes in nearly 3,000 municipalities (Likewise, each node can offer 5G in different locations), a figure that has grown exponentially since March of this year when the operator had 2,000.

This band has ultra-fast speeds (more than 2Gbps) and very low latency, allowing better mobile experience, with almost instant downloads, streaming high quality, in addition to a more robust network on which to deploy advanced features to offer the best 5G services to both private and business users.

Telefónica completes its 5G coverage with the deployment of nodes in the 700 MHz band in 5,000 municipalitiesa figure that has also increased by 1,000 more locations compared to the first quarter. This band reinforces 5G in buildings and on large surfaces, which translates into broader service in rural areas, roads and interiors.

Network quality

Telefónica stands out for its 5G Stand Alone (5G SA) network, so that the 5,700 municipalities that have the operator’s 5G, whether through the 700 MHz band, the 3,500 MHz band or both, offer maximum benefits especially useful for companies.

5G SA enhances the capabilities of 5G by using it throughout the network infrastructure, which means higher data speeds, lower latency and allows to facilitate the implementation of functionalities such as Network Slicing or Edge Computingwhich are of great relevance in sectors such as industry or logistics (ports or road transport) and in public services such as citizen services (Smart Cities).

Telefónica has been working on the business possibilities of 5G SA for several years and has carried out various use cases with real clients. In this sense, last year Telefónica became the first operator in Spain to launch a mobile connectivity with 5G Network Slicing for enterprises and has established it in a pioneering way in the emergency service of 112 of Extremadura.

The quality of the Movistar mobile network has recently been endorsed by Ookla, independent company specialized and benchmark in measuring internet speed worldwide, as reflected in its report Speedtest Connectivity Report on the state of networks in Spain during the first half of 2025.

Telefónica’s mobile network that provides The Movistar service has obtained the best overall score in terms of performancewhich makes it, according to the data from the Ookla report, the best mobile network and the best 5G network in Spain, with a notable advantage in this technology over the second operator.
