The Church collected more than 429 million euros through personal income tax in 2024

The number of statements of the Personal Income Tax (IRPF) in favor of the Catholic Church was 7,946,347 taxpayers in fiscal year 2024, 106,363 more than in 2023, which yielded an assigned amount of 429,335,080 euros, 46,897,081 euros more than the previous year, 12% more.
As reported this Thursday by the Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE)these provisional data were received on December 3 from the Secretary of State for Finance from the tax allocation made in favor of the Catholic Church corresponding to 2024, a declaration made in the spring of 2025. Taking into account the joint income declarations, the Episcopate understands that There are more than nine million Spaniards who mark the X in favor of the Catholic Church, without this implying that they withhold more or return less when making the declaration.
The EEC also received complementary data regarding the breakdown by autonomies. In these, The total number of statements in favor of the Church increased in 16 of the 17 autonomous communities (especially Andalusia, Madrid, Valencian Community and Castilla-La Mancha). The only decrease occurred in Navarra, as well as in the Provincial Treasury of Vizcaya, as occurred the previous year.
In percentage terms, there are nine communities that are above the average in percentage of assignees, highlighting Castilla-La Mancha (42.6%), Extremadura (42.1%), La Rioja (41.9%), Murcia (41.3%) and Castilla y León (40.3%). Below are the Canary Islands (24%), Galicia (23.5%) and Catalonia (15%).
The most important decreases in the number of assignees, in percentage terms, were focused on Navarra (-0.84%), Cantabria (-0.65%) and Castilla La Mancha (-0.61%).
The Episcopal Conference stressed that “behind all this data are each of the people who every year show their confidence in the work of the Church by marking the ‘X’ in the Income Tax Return”. And the gratitude campaign launched by the Secretariat for the Sustainability of the Church with the motto ‘More than 9 million thanks’ is dedicated to them.
