These are the additives that are going to be banned in Europe
Last November 2023, the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) published a report in which it warned of the genotoxicity risk of aromatic additives of smoked products that are used for various prepared food products.
“EFSA has assessed the safety of eight smoke flavors on the EU market whose authorization needed to be renewed, in accordance with the applicable legislation,” stated the report, which highlighted that risks related to their genotoxicity could not be ruled out, which is the “ability of a chemical to damage the genetic material of cells.”
When will these products stop being sold?
These additives are present in certain foods and can also be used as flavorings in soups, sauces, drinks, chips, ice cream and baked goods. Finally, the European Union, with the support of the Twenty-Seven, removed smoked aromas from the market due to their health risk last April.

The regulation would come into force at the end of this spring, establishing progressive withdrawal periods “to give products and operators time to adapt to the new standards.” In this sense, the deadline for the withdrawal in establishments and supermarkets of chips, sauces or soups that contain these additives It will be two years.
