Ethics or aesthetics | Opinion of Iñaki Ortega

These two words are very similar. The two come from Greekethics comes from ethoswhich can be translated as character or customs and, on the other hand, aesthetics comes from the word aisthesissomething like the sensations or perceptions we have. Both also have their origin in philosophythat is, in those great questions that human beings have asked themselves about life. Ethics tells us how to behave and the aesthetics why we perceive something as beautiful or ugly.

Perhaps because of all of the above or because ethics and aesthetics are written almost the same, since start and end with the same letters and in the middle there is a t, I have the feeling that those are getting more and more confused two words. The reason I fear is in this world so accelerated in which we live with little time to reflect and the need, at the same time, to count everything we do and think. The emergence of the immediacy of social networks, with such a small window of attention that we have and the requirement to use it to continue existing as a professional or as a personleads us to assume the codes of the influencers: generate impactgood or bad, but don’t forget our digital footprint.

In a manner and manner that complex issues are dismissed with an outburst; transcendental situations in life are explained with a photo or a song; relevant career changes with an emoji and the positioning in the face of the world’s conflicts is summarized in the colors of a flag or a fetish word.

It is worth remembering that Ethics refers to what is well done and aesthetics refers to what is done being beautiful.. But the need to explain complex concepts and situations in a very short time has made us opt for aesthetics to the detriment of ethics. The how matters more than the what, That is, what I put on social networks is aesthetic, helps me have more followers or a best image It is worth more than if it is thought out, argued and in accordance with my scale of values and that of the society in which I live.

We have forgotten with so much cultural battle that the important thing is ethicsif the behavior is correct beyond the aesthetics of what my followers will experience when they read my post.

The serious thing is that the way we behave on social networks has been exported to other areas of life. We have been infected by so many hours on the internet and when we are with friendsas a family, but also at work we reproduce the codes of social networks. Every time we dedicate less time for those we love, but also less time to think the reason for things and of course to reflect on what is right or wrong. We only think about dispatching each task quickly – of course, looking good – to go on to the next one. AND we have forgotten that life is not posts with reactions but people with feelings.
