Iberdrola launches the Noronha Verde project that reinforces its leadership in clean energy electrification in Brazil

The president of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galanhas presented the project Green Noronha in the Brazilian archipelago Fernando de Noronha with the Minister of Mines and Energy of Brazil, Alexandre Silveira. The event was also attended by the governor of Pernambuco, Raquel Lyra, the Minister of Defense, José Múrcio, and the CEO of Neoenergia, Eduardo Capelastegui.

This project is one of the milestones highlighted by the Government of Brazil within the framework of the Climate Summit (COP30) being held in Belém. This pioneering initiative integrates solar energy and battery storage to convert Fernando de Noronha Island, a World Heritage Site, into the first inhabited ocean island in Latin America with a highly sustainable energy model.

With an investment of 350 million reais (more than 50 million euros), Noronha Green will advance decarbonization through renewable sources and technologies clean. To this end, the construction of a photovoltaic plant with more than 30,000 panels and a capacity of 22 MWpwhich will be integrated with an advanced 49-volt battery storage system MWh. Until now, the island’s energy was produced at the plant Tubarãowhich uses biodiesel.

Noronha Green is part of the program More for Noronha, developed by the subsidiary Brazilian of the Group, Neoenergiain collaboration with the Ministry of Mines and Energy from Brazil and the state government of Pernambuco. NeoenergYoto It is the largest electricity company in Brazil by number of clients, with presence in 18 States and the Federal District. The purpose of this island project is drivesr island sustainability through smart networkselectric mobility, technological innovation and microgeneration distributed. The first phase of the project It will be operational in April 2026 and the second in 2027.

During the launching ceremony, was also inaugurated the first floating solar plant in the archipelagolocated in the reservoir of Xareuwith a power of 622 kWp and an estimated generation of 1.083 MWh per year. The installation will prevent the emission of 717 tons of CO₂.

Iberdrola’s commitment to Brazil

Ignacio Galan has stood out in his speech that the project is “the best example of the commitment to Neoenergia and Iberdrola with the future of Brazil, that throughout the almost 30 years has become an increasingly essential part of our Group”.

He plan investor of the company in the country contemplate more than 7.000 million euros for the next five yearswhich add to the more than 100,000 million reais (15.000 million euros at current exchange rates) allocated by Iberdrola to generation, transportation and distribution infrastructure in Brazil in recent years almost 30 years.

The president of Iberdrola has stated that the initiative, marks a before and after” in the life of the population of this island, which is part of a declared archipelago pattrimony nnatural of the hHumanity by UNESCOand the convertsinto an international benchmark in terms of self-sufficiency, security, energy efficiency and environmental care. In a word, truly sustainable.”

This project exemplifies the leadership ofl Group in the push for electrification with clean energywhich allows progress in decarbonization while promoting security of supply, self-sufficiency, competitiveness and industrial development.

Sustainability thanks to electrification

This project is one of the milestones highlighted by the Government of Brazil within the framework of lto Climate Summit (COP30) that is having place in the country of Rio, under the motto Less promises, more action.

In this context, andl president of Iberdrola has spoken at COP30 in the panel on energy transition in which the Secretary General of the United Nations, the President of Brazil, the President of the European Commission and the Director of the International Energy Agency, among other international leaders, also participated.. Ignacio Galan has highlighted that investments in renewables are advancing, But more energy storage and electrical networks are also needed to electrify the economy and respond to demand, which is expected to increase by 50% worldwide in the next 10 years.

Galán has defended that economic and environmental sustainability They are fully compatible and this is demonstrated by Iberdrola’s track record. The Group has invested in the last 25 years nearly 175,000 million euros to advance electrification through renewable energies, networks electrical and storageand this has allowed the increase strategic autonomy and security of supply and improver competitivenesswhile promoting development and social progress.

Furthermore, the president of Iberdrola has indicated that, for this objective, it is very important a collaboration between companies and administrations that allows finding solutions to advance in caring for the environment and climate action.
