Its price shoots up 16% in one year due to the high cost of eggs and almonds

The price of nougat has soared this Christmas by 16%, driven by the rise in the prices of almonds and eggs, two of its main ingredients, according to the study carried out by the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU).
Specifically, branded nougat has become a luxury item, since the manufacturer’s one already costs 33 euros/kilo, while the white label has a price of less than half, around 15 euros/kg.
The data corresponds to the study carried out by the consumer organization on the price evolution of 107 traditional nougat referencesboth hard (Alicante) and soft (Jijona), which reveals an increase of 15.95% compared to December of last year, leaving the average price of this type of nougat at 23 euros/kg.
The report reveals that the price differences between hard and soft nougat are generally minimal, with increases of 15.8% and 16.1%, respectively. However, the same does not occur when comparing brands, since if the price of private labels has risen by 9.4%, manufacturer brands have increased by 24.3%.
Among these last The increases of brands such as El Lobo stand out, with increases of more than 50%El Almendro in its Own Harvest line (37%), El Quijote (36%) and Rey (33%), while among the white brands the rise of Aldi’s soft nougat stands out, with an increase of 27%.
Behind the rise in prices of nougat, one of the most typical Christmas sweets, stands out the rise of almonds, the main component of these sweets, since their price has increased significantly, going from 90-95 euros per 100 kg of shelled almonds between January and August 2024 to about 120 euros in 2025, with peaks of 138 euros in June, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture.
High demand and speculative factors
The markets confirm increases of 15% to 25% in almond varieties such as Marcona, Largueta and Comuna. OCU points out that there are no clear causes for the rise in almonds, beyond high demand and possible speculative factors.
While The price of eggs has also risen, Therefore, the egg white, one of the ingredients in the preparation of this product, has been impacted. Its cost has shot up 50% in the last six months.
On the contrary, The price of sugar has fallen, although its impact is limited compared to the weight of almonds. However, products without added sugar have experienced an average increase of 13.6%, compared to 16.6% for products with honey and sugar. A difference that is explained above all by the greater presence of nougats without added sugar among white brands.
In this context, The consumer organization recommends comparing prices and that cheaper alternatives be chosen to reduce the impact on the family budget.
