meat takes the biggest bite from the budget



The average expenditure on food per person per year in Spain amounts to 1,787 eurosaccording to the report ‘Food in Spain’, published by the public company Mercasa.

Meat is the product that spends the most money per person with 352.3 eurosreaching the amount allocated to seafood products of 200.1 euros. As for fresh fruits, the expense is 169.5 euros; 139.3 euros are allocated to fresh vegetables and potatoes, and 33.2 euros to processed vegetables and fruits.

For its part, in volume, always with data from 2024, the last complete year, consumption trends reflect that Each person in Spain consumed 41.6 kilos of meat18 kilos of seafood, 79.4 kilos of fresh fruits, 67.1 kilos of fresh vegetables and potatoes, and 11.5 kilos of processed fruits and vegetables.

Olive oil, wine and eggs They are foods rooted in Spanish gastronomic culture and, therefore, with a widespread presence in household demand. In 2024 each person consumed 5.6 liters of olive oil and spent 44.9 euros on this product; Per capita consumption of wine and derivatives amounted to 8.4 liters and represented an expense of 27.8 euros; finally, spending on eggs reached 28.9 euros and corresponds to the 143 eggs consumed on average per person.
