Renfe launches a payment system that allows you to save up to 3,600 euros annually

Renfe has activated the Vía Pass, a pay-per-use system designed for people who frequently use Avant services on their daily trips and that allows save up to 3,600 euros annually.

As reported by Renfe, this is a new measure promoted by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, complementary to the bonuses that have been extended from January 1, 2026. These aids also allow discounts of 50% on Avant subscriptions.

Via Pass works on the principle ‘Pay As You Travel’. Thus, the traveler pays only for the journeys they make and, the more they travel, the greater the discounts automatically applied. The charge for each trip is made on the date it is made.

With an average price of the Avant single ticket of 22.80 euros, a person who travels frequently can spend more than 5,000 euros per year. With Pass Vía, this expense is significantly reduced.

Specifically, The annual cost can drop to around 2,760 euros with a 45% discount and up to 1,400 euros per year in cases of greater recurrence. This represents a saving of more than 3,600 euros per year, with prices per trip that can remain at 6.40 euros.

The initial discount is 45% for the first trip and increases progressively depending on the number of trips made, and can be reached 90% discounts for those who make 120 or more trips in the quarterwhich would mean more than a 72% average discount for the entire period.

In 2024 alone, more than six million trips were made with Avant passes, mostly people who use the train for daily trips to go to work or study. This new system is designed precisely to respond to this profile of regular users, who will be able to benefit from a more flexible model, adapted to different mobility patterns and with direct and measurable economic savings.

This subscription system requires the completion of 20 trips that must be made during a calendar quarter or 10 trips during a period of 45 days. If this figure is not reached, a charge will be applied for the difference between the 20 or 10 mandatory trips and those actually made. The amount of the journeys not made will be calculated taking as reference the most used origin-destination.

Subscription is free and is done through the Renfe website. Once activated, the traveler can consult and manage all trips and payments in real time.

Payment by bank card

With the new Vía Pass, unlike the current subscription that allowed a single trip, trips can be made on all Avant services, regardless of the origin and destination of the trip. The amount of each trip will correspond to the origin and destination of the journey made, to which the discount will be applied.

Payment will be made by means of a bank card, which is provided when subscribing to the system and is automatically associated with the traveler’s account to charge each trip upon completion. Each booked trip generates a confirmation email with the details and the amount charged.

In addition, reservations are free and can be canceled free of charge up to 60 minutes before the train departure. Thus, Via Pass combines convenience, control and transparency, and allows the management of trips and payments in a simple, secure way and without surprises.

New ten trip pass

In parallel, Renfe will launch an Avant subscription for 10 trips per origin and destination, valid for 30 days. This product is designed for medium or low recurrence, It will be sold in prepaid mode and will allow up to ten trips in the selected relationship within the established validity period.

To guarantee safe use and avoid fraud, Pase Vía is personal, nominative and non-transferable. Renfe control personnel can request the person’s identification that travels along with the subscription, in physical or digital format.

If any fraud is detected, the subscription will be automatically blockedwhich will prevent new reservations and the acquisition of another for 60 days. These measures ensure legitimate use and protect both the user and the integrity of the service.
