Sánchez defends the economic achievements of his Government, but recognizes that the purchasing power of Spaniards is still low

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, forcefully defended this Monday the achievements of the coalition executive to continue advancing in a “fairer, more competitive, more productive and more humane” economy. During the intervention in which he took stock of the political course this Monday, Sánchez highlighted how the national economy is growing more than twice the European average or the 3 million jobs created since 2018, when he came to power, although he acknowledged that there is still a lot of work to be done and that the purchasing power of Spaniards “is still low”.

The objective must be to ensure that these large figures have a “microeconomic impact on the daily lives of workers,” he assured. “It is undeniable that there is a lot to do in this area. That the purchasing power of Spaniards is still low. There are still too many people who live in precarious conditions. But what is undeniable is that we are going in the right direction,” Sánchez stressed.

The president, who is not considering bringing forward elections in the midst of a storm due to the cases of corruption and sexual harassment that plague his party, has also admitted the difficulties that he is experiencing in carrying out his reformist agenda due to the lack of sufficient parliamentary support. “In recent years, after the financial crisis, therefore, we don’t have large majoritiesthat is evident. But what there are are great results for the social majority of our country, because so many jobs have never been created in such a short time,” he stated.

According to Sánchez, the real disposable income of households (discounting the effect of inflation) is almost 10% higher today than when he came to power, something that he has attributed to the income and redistribution policies applied by his Government, while the average salary would have increased by 17% and inequality and poverty are at the lowest levels since records exist.
