“The middle class is no longer necessary”

The rising standard of living in Spain, where inflation continues to rise and housing is increasingly inaccessible, has cornered the spanish middle classwhose salaries are not in line with the current economic situation. Given this situation, the economist Santiago Niño Becerra has passed judgment on the difficult situation that this social class is experiencing, which in his opinion “has no longer necessary“.

The professor of Economic Structure has shared an article in his X profile in which another economist, Carles Méndez, summarizes the current situation of the middle class in Spain. “We are facing a social class without access to aid or reductionsand does not have the economic freedom to move assets and capital to evade tax pressure as the upper class can do,” Méndez considers, a statement with which Niño Becerra agrees.

Méndez continues defining this population segment as “the class that he receives nothing and pays everything“. Niño Becerra has echoed these words on the social network to express his opinion on the matter, and he has been very clear.

“The conclusion seems obvious: the middle class is no longer necessary“, indicated the economist, who details below in which brackets a person who can be considered part of this group in Spain falls.

As he explains, “a middle class income is between 75% and 200% of the median income.” That is to say, he adds, “in Spain in 2023 it represents a annual income between €18,316 and €36,632“.

However, Niño Becerra points out that this data “is not very significant”, since the differences by autonomous community must be taken into account. “They do not have the same purchasing power €20,000 in Bilbao than in Jaén”, he concludes.
