the salary you leave behind and the salary you could earn for the next 15 years

Carlos Mazón resigned this Monday as president of the Generalitat Valenciana, alleging pressure and wear and tear after his management of DANA, which claimed the lives of 229 people on October 29, 2024 in the Valencian Community. “I can’t take it anymore,” he said, while admitting: “I made mistakes and I will live with them all my life, but none due to political calculation.”

His resignation now opens the countdown to the presentation of candidacies and poses a new stage for the Alicante leader, whose past and future economic situation we review below.

From head of the Consell to the Legal Advisory Council

During his tenure, Mazón received 91,398.24 euros gross per year, the official remuneration established for the head of the Consell. Now, after his departure, he will be able to benefit from the Statute of Former Presidents of the Generalitat Valenciana, the regulations that regulate the status of those who have held the highest regional responsibility.

The Statute of the Former Presidents of the Generalitat Valenciana opens the door to the Legal Advisory Council (CJC) to those who have held the leadership of the Consell, the highest advisory body of the regional Executive. To access this privilege for 15 years it is necessary to have completed an entire term.. When this period is not met, the rule reduces the permanence to the time actually exercised, always with a minimum of two years.

In the case of Carlos Mazón, the counter stopped prematurely. Invested on July 15, 2023, his resignation comes after two years and three months at the head of the Valencian Government. This step back now places him in a delicate point: if it is considered that he has not exhausted the legislature, he would only have the right to sit on the CJC for two years; If, on the contrary, it is interpreted that the political cycle has passed normally despite a possible electoral advance, he could secure his seat for 15 years.

The position is not symbolic. The CJC transparency portal states that This responsibility is remunerated with 86,862.36 gross euros per year, an amount very close to the income he received as president. But that door cannot be opened if he remains in active politics: Mazón could only receive this salary if he renounces his membership as a deputy.

Beyond their presence in the advisory body, the statute also guarantees former presidents a material provision to maintain its public and institutional activity. The Consell is obliged to set up a support office for them to serve as a minimum structure after they leave office. The objective, according to the norm, is to ensure that those who have held the highest regional judiciary maintain a certain operational capacity in their new stage.

This office includes two advisors and a driver, selected at the proposal of the former president himself and dependent on the Presidency. All these personnel will be temporary and, if they come from the Valencian Administrationwill remain in the corresponding administrative situation. Added to this is an adequate office, a budget item for ordinary expenses and a vehicle from the Generalitat’s mobile fleet.
