This is what a primary school teacher earns per month in Spain (without extras or three-year periods)

UGT urges the Government to resume negotiations to sign a new agreement that contemplates the return of 100% of the extraordinary payments that were canceled during the economic crisis of 2010 and although, in a statement, he appreciates that public service salaries have recovered in the last fourteen years, he emphasizes that “there is no reason” to the freezing of the two extras from that year.

The evolution of teaching salaries in Spain

According to the report on the Evolution of teacher salaries in Public Education 2010-2024, the gross monthly salaries of primary school teachers have increased from an average of 1,483 euros on average 14 years ago to 1,722 euros in 2024. This remuneration takes into account the base salary and the destination supplement, but not the three-year periods or extra pay.

On the other hand, the average gross salary of secondary school teachers has evolved from 1,775 euros in 2010 to 2,034 euros per month in 2024, while that of basic vocational training would have gone from 1,599 euros in 2010 to 1,854 in 2024. The study reveals that, as of 2017, with the Framework Agreement for the Administration of the 21st century, a recovery of lost purchasing power beganwith a total remuneration increase between 2018 and 2024 of 16.95%.

The salary of teachers compared to the rest of Europe

The salary of teachers in Spain is located at lower-intermediate position within Europe. A primary school teacher earns, depending on the autonomous community and seniority, which is equivalent to about 25,000 euros per year. This figure is below the European average and far from countries like Germany, Netherlands or Denmarkwhere teachers can overcome the 50,000 euros per year.

Furthermore, the real purchasing power of Spanish teachers has grown very little in the last decade, just 2% between 2015 and 2023according to data from Eurydice and Euronews. This means that, despite nominal wage increases, inflation and the cost of living have reduced their real value.
