Construction adds 103 deaths in work accidents in 2025, 25.6% more than in 2024
Construction is a sector in which work accidents such as the collapse of the floor of the building on Hileras Street on Tuesday are sadly commonplace. The trade, which requires considerable physical demand and exposure to risk, has registered between January and July a total of 103 deaths in accidents during the working dayaccording to the statistics on workplace accidents published each month by the Ministry of Labor.
The number of deaths has been recorded a rebound of 25.6% compared to the first seven months of last yearwhen 82 deaths were recorded during the workday (21 less than we have in 2025). The hundred people who have lost their lives while working in construction also exceed the 70 deaths that were recorded in that same period in 2023.
The construction It is the sector with the most fatalities during the day (excluded in itinere) records the entire Spanish productive fabric. The 103 deaths at work recorded between January and July clearly exceed the 65 in the transportation and storage sector, the 48 in manufacturing, 29 in the agricultural sector, the 24 in commerce or the 23 in administrative and auxiliary services.
29% of all accidents at work that resulted in fatalities in Spain occurred in construction. However, the accident rate in the sector has reduced considerably since the times of the real estate bubble, when activity was skyrocketing. For example, in 2007, 278 deaths were recorded during the day, 0.76 per day. A noticeably higher rate than the 0.48 that have been recorded in 2025.
The construction It is also the sector where the most serious accidents are recorded. So far this year there are already 514, more than those seen in the manufacturing industry (355), transportation and storage (223), commerce (200) or the agricultural sector (190).
These figures may be influenced by the number of workers in each sector, but when this effect is neutralized, the accident rate in construction continues to be the highest in the entire labor market. So far this year, 461 work accidents have been registered per 100,000 membersa rate that more than doubles the national average of 211. However, it is true that the incidence has been reduced compared to the 490 deaths per 100,000 members that were recorded at this time last year.
