Employment closes the best October in four years with 142,000 new affiliates thanks to the strong pull of education

Employment continues to be on a roll in Spain despite the slight economic slowdown seen in the third quarter of the year. The Social Security affiliation data released this Tuesday by the department headed by Elma Saiz indicates that 141,926 new jobs were created in Spain in October. We are facing the highest record for this month since 2021 and the second highest in the entire historical series.
Regarding registered unemployment, the offices of the State Public Employment Service (SEPE) counted 2,443,766 unemployed last month. There are 22,101 more than in September, but registered unemployment levels remain stable at their lowest levels since 2007.
Returning to employment, Social Security now has 21,839,592 employed persons, increasingly closer to the barrier of 22 million which, if the dynamism of the labor market is maintained, could be reached in 2026. As was already the case in September, the main driver of employment in October was employment, which incorporated 172,216 employed persons. Many of them are workers with discontinuous permanent contracts who return to activity when classes and extracurricular activities are reactivated. The strong push in education compensates for the drop in membership in hospitality, healthcare, and administrative activities and auxiliary services.
