The search for less polluting alternatives to current energy production has given rise to environmentally friendly and equally effective solutions. Some of them, like green gases are gradually making their way into popular knowledge, demonstrating its numerous benefits.
To know the position of the readers of The Information In this regard, we have launched the ‘The Green Gases Observatory’ initiative led by Naturgy. Throughout six surveys carried out in the stories from the header’s Instagram account, The knowledge of more than 9,000 people has been surveyed about which factors they know and which ones they still have some doubts about.
The figures leave no room for doubt: the 63% of those surveyed know as much that methane is the main component of biomethane like that comes from agricultural, urban and industrial organic waste. That is, they quickly relate this green gas to a sustainable origin.
In tune with this, 59% responded that the way in which this energy source helps in decarbonization is by avoiding greenhouse gas emissions. Being of natural origin, it does not generate polluting emissions, since the only CO2 it produces is the same as the elements used in its production. Furthermore, as it is easy to store, it allows diversifying energy sources, increasing Spain’s energy autonomy.
The application at home, the great unknown
Although they know its existence and benefits as a concept, followers of The Information They need to be aware of the real application of biomethane. Only 19% knew that its use in homes is the same as that of natural gas, because its composition is equivalent, which makes it a sustainable and realistic alternative.
Within this lack of knowledge, it is especially notable that slightly less than half of those surveyed were clear that it is not necessary to do any kind of work at home to use this green gas, since it uses the same devices and facilities as its non-sustainable alternative. Although the rest thought that it was necessary to change the entire installation or that the boilers are not yet prepared for it, one of the most interesting points of this energy source is that it can be distributed through the already existing gas infrastructure.
Although they are still not very clear about how to dispose of biomethane in their homes, the responses show that followers of the economic environment assume that this It can be used in the home for cooking, heating and water heating.. Biomethane makes it possible to advance a realistic energy transition thanks to the fact that its application is simple and can be easily stored.

A joint commitment to the environment
Naturgy, whose innovative spirit has characterized it since its origins 180 years ago, has been a pioneer in the introduction of green gases and in addressing the challenges of sustainability in the energy sector, as well as social demands. In line with this environmental commitment, they launched the #BuenaHuella project in 2022, which focuses this concern on the communication sector.
This is not just an awareness campaign, but involves concrete measures to measure, reduce and neutralize the carbon footprint in all publications and advertising campaigns. The Information has joined these efforts and in the preparation of this content we have generated only 0.76 kg of CO2. How have we achieved it? Minimizing the sending of non-essential emails, printing only if it was unavoidable, and always in black and white, and carrying out an efficient web design.
The surveys of ‘The Green Gases Observatory’ make it clear that the readers of The Information They have certain notions of what biomethane is, such as its origin and its main composition, as well as its environmental benefits. However, there is still a lack of awareness about how to use this sustainable energy source in homes, starting with the fact that it can use the already existing gas infrastructure, without the need to do any type of works or changes to the facilities.
