This is how the minimum wage could rise in 2026

He Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI) It will be debated again in 2026. A few weeks ago the employers’ associations CEOE and Cepyme proposed a 1.5% increase next year. This is a figure that employers considered reasonable, since the SMI would be above 60% of the average salary in Spain, that is, the reference sought by the Ministry of Labor. However, this offer did not convince the ministry, which called it lax and speculative.

This proposal from the businessmen would place the SMI at 16,824 gross euros per year in 2026. The remuneration would amount to 1,202 gross euros per month in 14 payments for a full day. This represents about 17.7 euros more per month than in 2025. However, at the moment there is no agreement and the Ministry of Labor hopes to resume negotiations after Christmas.

What will happen to the Minimum Interprofessional Wage in 2026

Once the Christmas holidays are over, the ministry led by Yolanda Díaz will meet again with unions and businessmen to set the increase in the SMI. There are two different types of situations on the table. On the one hand, an increase of 3.1% in which personal income tax is exempt and, on the other, 4.7% in the event that taxes had to be paid. This means that the salary would be around 1,221 euros or 1,240 euros in fourteen payments.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Finance will have to study personal income tax deduction adjustments to be able to adapt it to that SMI. The objective is to ensure that the net salary of people who have less income can increase.

It must be remembered that it would be another new increase because the Government agreed at the beginning of this year the increase in the SMI in 2025 of 4.41%which meant 50 euros per month and placed the minimum payment at 1,184 gross euros per month in 14 payments. In 2024, the SMI also increased by 5% to 1,134 euros per month.
